Storing common words with uncommon spelling patterns in one, picturable sentence.
Description
Often, we have many different ways to spell the same sound. So how do we know which pattern to choose? This activity is about Flashback Sentences, a spelling strategy that uses common words with the same uncommon spellings to make a short story that you can imagine, draw, act out, and remember easily. The goal of the Flashback activity is to share some of our favorite and useful sentences and drawings to get you started in using this fun and effective spelling strategy. We provide materials to help you learn, practice and apply the skill to foster transfer. After you have learned and practiced the sentence, you can use it to help you spell. If the word is in the sentence, it is spelled with the unusual spelling choice. If it is not, choose the more typical spelling pattern. As you are trying to remember which spelling choice to make for a word, you will “flash back” to the sentence where you stored the atypical spellings, making it easier to read and spell.
