IMSE Orton-Gillingham Nature Adventure Classroom

Welcome to the IMSE Orton-Gillingham Nature Adventure Classroom – an innovative virtual space designed to enhance IMSE OG+ lessons with an engaging journey. In this dynamic environment, teachers invite students to explore the KoalaGo world, unfolding lessons as a gamified adventure through nature. From the phonological awareness start to the ocean room finale, the classroom mirrors a captivating nature-themed game board. Both teachers and students create avatars, immersing themselves in a fun and effective learning experience. This seamless integration of the IMSE OG+ program with an immersive world ensures students are fully engaged throughout the educational experience. Say hello to virtual education that captivates from start to finish! The virtual classroom immerses the teacher and student(s) into the Orton-Gillingham lesson in video game form. If you have active students and are looking for new ways to increase engagement, this is for you. If your students like games like Minecraft, they will feel right at home with their gamified OG+ lesson. This was designed for virtual tutoring sessions but has also been tested in small groups using a smartboard. Included in this activity is a 3D virtual nature-themed classroom and 26 accompanying whiteboard slides. The virtual classroom includes designated areas for all steps of the IMSE OG+ lesson with bonus activities such as a dictation letter tile wall, red word apple spelling, a 3D open and closed syllable house, and a gameboard spelling test. The accompanying slides imitate the activities in a 2D format with movable images and sticky notes. For use in private virtual tutoring, the teacher invites the student to their KoalaGo classroom via their classroom link. (A teacher’s classroom link never changes.) Once the student requests access to the classroom, the teacher can let them in before pressing the chipmunk icon, which will drop all classroom members into the virtual world in avatar form, falling from the sky with colorful parachutes. Once all the players have personalized their avatars, they are ready to walk through the steps of the lesson. Remember to reward your students with tons of stars, confetti, and gems for all their hard work! While this can be an intimidating new space for teachers, the majority of children feel right at home. The collaboration of skills by the teacher who is instructing literacy lessons and the students who thrive in gamified environments truly levels the playing field and fosters increased confidence in our struggling readers. For use in tier 1 and 2 settings, students can join the teacher from their separate devices or the game can be displayed on a smartboard. Imagine announcing to your classroom that you will be doing literacy lessons collaboratively inside a video game! I invite my students to stand up and run when my avatar is moving throughout the virtual space and to jump and give a thumbs up for real words on the blending board. High energy, effective instruction, tons of fun, resulting in retained learning that builds confidence and enjoyment in literacy. This classroom was designed by Radecki Literacy in collaboration with the Institute for Multisensory Education and KoalaGo. It is available for purchase on the KoalaGo marketplace.
